The Best BBQ Restaurant in Gatlinburg
Whoa! No kidding… this place is spectacular! The best barbecue restaurant in Gatlinburg is hands down the Hungry Bear BBQ just across the road from Carr’s Cottages’ back entrance. You will know you’re close when your mouth starts watering from the smoky smells wafting through the air.
This is not your typical restaurant. The Hungry Bear is located in a blue house with a big white porch and HUGE smoker off to the side. When you enter, you’ll be greeted by the sweet scent of what’s cookin and probably a ‘be right with ya’ from Laurie. Laurie is a staple at Hungry Bear who works most every day serving guests & stirring up homemade potato salad and coleslaw.
The main area of the ‘restaurant’ is where you’ll find the big white board menu beside the fireplace, and plenty of chips and cold drinks including bottled Cherrwine and Pepsi on ice. If you’re like us and have a hard time deciding what to choose, mix and match! (We ordered TWO sandwiches instead of just one because making the choice between the smoked chicken and the pulled pork was way too difficult.)
After ordering, take a look around into the quaint dining rooms or have a seat outside on the picnic table. Both inside and out are quite relaxing and comfortable, and clean. It didn’t take us but a minute to notice and appreciate the “94” Health Score posted on the wall! If you get a chance, say hello to Paul. He’s the nice man doing ‘the heavy lifting’ and cooking up the succulent meat you’re about to sink your teeth into.
It won’t take long for your meal to be ready, so listen for a yell or watch for Laurie to bring it to you. On the table is your choice of bbq sauces so go ahead and dig right in!
Our meal was terrific from start to finish… from our sandwiches to the homemade red potato salad, to the pleasant conversations with Laurie and Paul. We were so impressed by how proud of the Hungry Bear that they are and how much they enjoy their job, and that was BEFORE we ate the food. They both take a lot of pride in their quality food and hospitality, and it shows.
